Mavra / Pierrot lunaire

These works are performed together:
  • Mavra
  • Pierrot lunaire

Fresh from winning the 2022 European Opera Directing Award, Anthony Almeida and Rosanna Vize bring a bold new vision to Igor Stravinsky’s rarely-performed Mavra and Schoenberg’s extraordinary melodrama, Pierrot lunaire.

Jette Parker Young Artist Michael Papadopoulos conducts the Britten Sinfonia, who are joined by guest pianist and JPYA member Michael Sikich. This dynamic double bill continues the Programme’s 20th Anniversary celebrations.

Stravinsky’s one-act opera is based on a narrative poem by Pushkin, in which a Hussar disguises himself as a cook in an attempt to spend more time with his lover.

Schoenberg’s expressive Pierrot lunaire, pre-dating the 12-tone technique for which he is celebrated, transforms into Sprechstimme the texts of poems by Albert Giraud on subjects ranging from love, sex and religion to violence, crime and blasphemy.

Multi-award winning Lighting Designer, Lucy Carter, well-known for her mainstage opera and ballet work, and Movement Director, Anjali Mehra complete the creative team.
